World Book Day at Haddenham Library

Thursday 6 March

To celebrate this special day, the library hosted visits from Saturn, Earth and Mercury classes at Robert Arkenstall School on 6th March.   The library chose ‘The Sea’ as the theme for stories and activities.  The photo shows a selection of our sea-related books.

Reading for pleasure is the main aim of World Book Day, and the children certainly enjoyed the stories they heard.

All the classes coloured or drew sea related pictures.  These will be mounted as a collage to display in the library.  They also had the chance to do a book quiz, vote for their favourite sea creatures (a definite win for the shark!) and choose between Pirates and Merfolk (this was a clear win for the pirates).

Some children also had time to colour more sea pictures, do a book quiz or complete a puzzle. to take home with them.

It was good to hear lots of interesting facts about the sea and sea life.  One child told us about the brain in each tentacle of an octopus – does this make them 8 times cleverer than we are?  Other children had some great ideas about where to bury your treasure.  The best idea, apparently, is to make friends with the sharks, then bury it where they swim, which will protect it from unauthorised people.

To complete the day’s activities, every child was able to choose a book to take home with them.  These are either duplicates or books not listed on the computer system, and therefore can’t be catalogued.

A few more visitors came in during the after school session. Free books were also offered to these children.

Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Our next book is 'The Miniaturist' by Jessie Burton. Set in Amsterdam in 1686–87, it was inspired by Petronella Oortman's doll's house on display at the Rijksmuseum (pictured). We will be meeting in the library to discuss it on Tuesday 17th February at 3.30pm. Do let us know if you'd like to join us - we will provide a copy of the book.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.
